You might be able to purchase the home you rent from Muir.

 

Right to Buy

You may be eligible to buy all of your home with a discount under this scheme if :

  • You have a secure tenancy which is a tenancy given to you by Muir before 15 January 1989, or you were a council tenant when the ownership of your home was transferred to Muir.
  • Your home is general needs housing – not sheltered or other housing suitable for elderly or disabled people.

Right to Acquire

You may be eligible to buy all of your home with a discount under this scheme if:

  • Your home was built or bought by Muir after 31st March 1997 and funded through a social housing grant.
  • Your home is not in a rural area (this is usually an area where there are fewer than 3,000 properties).
  • Your home is General Needs Housing – not sheltered or any other housing suitable for elderly or disabled people.
  • You have at least three years public sector tenancy.
  • You have lived in your current home for at least 12 months.

What happens when you receive my Right to Acquire or Right to Buy application?

  • We will arrange to visit you at home once we have received a completed form and the supporting information required to complete a tenancy check.
  • We will write to you within four weeks to let you know if you are eligible to purchase your home. This will be up to eight weeks if you wish to include tenancies with other landlords.
  • If eligible, we will then arrange a valuation on your home. We will calculate any discount entitlement and write to you to confirm the price you can buy your home for. We will write to you within eight weeks if you are able to buy the freehold of your home and within 12 weeks if you are able to buy the leasehold interest in your home.
  • You then have 12 weeks to let us know if you want to go ahead
  • We will then each instruct  a solicitor and we will each be responsible for our own costs.

 

Right to Shared Ownership scheme

You may be eligible to purchase a share of between 10% and 75% of your home and pay rent on the remaining share, which Muir own if your home is developed with grant from the Affordable Homes Programme from April 2021 to 2026.

*There is no discount available on this scheme.

To be eligible to apply you will need to have lived in your current home for at least 12 months and have lived in social housing for three years. Some Muir customers may be eligible to purchase their home from 2025.
