GAMBIAN ADVENTURE GIVES MUIR RESIDENT CHANCE TO HELP AT AFRICAN SCHOOL

A CARING Muir resident has been helping schoolchildren in The Gambia.

Rick Hyde, who has been living at Muir’s Rowlands Lodge supported housing scheme in Chester for eleven years, embraced culture and communities when he took part in the project.

GambiaThe 32-year-old also got to handle snakes and enjoy plenty of wildlife during what was his second trip to the country with the ‘Live!’ youth club, which specialises in providing opportunities for people with learning difficulties.

“It was a really good experience,” Rick said.

“There was a big culture shock but the people were very friendly and it’s a very musical place with lots of drumming.

“It was great to work with the schools and help the children.

Gambia “Some of them have a difficult life so I enjoyed spending time doing things with them.”

Rick also visited the street markets and slipped into a snake farm, as well as seeing plenty of birds and other wildlife during an adventurous week away.

He also spent some time gardening, taking cookery lessons, learning how to make local drinks, while managing to fit in a little time relaxing on the beach too.

Gambia“It was really nice to speak to the people who live there and learn more about their lives,” Rick added.
