  • If possible, always buy from a retailer you can trust and follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing and using appliances.
  • Don’t leave appliances such as dishwashers or washing machines running overnight or when you are out of the house.
  • If your appliance begins making a strange noise or isn’t working properly, don’t ignore it. Always unplug it and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair technician.
  • Don’t overload washing machines or tumble dryers – take bulky items like large duvets to the cleaners.
  • Do regular checks of plugs and sockets for burn marks, sounds of crackling or to see if it feels to hot.
  • Clean behind your appliance to prevent dust build up.
  • If you have a tumble dryer, regularly clean the lint from its filter.
  • Clean your oven regularly and always clear away spillages immediately to avoid a build-up of debris and fat, which is a fire risk.
  • When using your microwave always follow the instructions on the package and ensure you only put things in there that are clearly marked as being microwave safe.
